best food for older dog with food allergies, itching and biting herself?

I have a 12 yr old dog with food allergies, she’s constantly itching and biting. The vet said she has food allergies, and gave prednisone, which is not helping. My husband can’t remember if the vet recommended any special food. She gets advantage for fleas, so it’s not a flea problem. I have 3 dogs in all, and she’s the only one with this problem. Is there any dog food that will help ease her food allergy?

Corn, wheat, and soy are the most common allergens in dog foods, so look for one without those ingredients. My dog does great on Wellness. Some dogs may be allergic to certain protein sources (usually chicken or beef), so you might try a lamb or fish based food, if you think that’s the case. Check ingredients labels on any treats the dog gets, too.
You need to give her a single protein diet. Hills Z/D is a good one. Royal Canin makes a good one too. In doing this, you can’t give her anything else. No treats, unless they are allergy specific. You can have her tested to find out what exactly she’s allergic to, but it’s pretty expensive.
Good luck!
Has the vet recommended a specific food?
Many dogs do well on a grain free diet.Wheat and corn are the main culprits.
There are numerous brands on the market that your animal may do well on.
Lamb based kibbles often bring relief
A brand that works for ours is called "Wellness".
try science diet…it’s really good…my vet recommend it for my two dogs
you should try to find a grain free food like Canidae or Taste of the Wild. corn soy and wheat are big allergens in dogs. if the allergy is severe enough you could try Dick Van Pattens Natural Balance. it is a limited ingredient diet which means there is only one protein and one carbohydrate, so there is less to be allergic to. i would try the sweet potato and fish or the sweet potato and venison formula as less dogs are allergic to those than chicken or lamb. good luck
I’d look for one that is Lamb and Rice. Or you might consider cooking for her.
Go talk with some people at a large pet store. They often have a lot of knowledge of their products.
If you can’t remember what the vet said, call them and ask, but I agree, corn and corn products is the first thing I would eliminate from the diet.
my dog also has a lot of food allegories so i cook for him. i got the recipes from this book Dr. Pitcairn’s complete secrets to the natural health of dogs and cats By: Richard H. Pitcairn and Susan Hubble Pitcairn. it helped me a lot. also you might want to by Omega 3 fish oil soft pills and give your dogs one each once a day a half hour before breakfast. its very good for skin and there nails and fur and this is what helped my dog’s itch to go away. hope i helped
You may also want to try By Nature pet foods, they are available at PetsMart and online. If she is itching herself a lot, give her a bath in oatmeal and use a conditioner on her hair.
My daughter has the same problem with her dog. She only feeds her dog chicken (she boils chicken breasts in plain water, cools them and tears them in small pieces. You can also use a food chopper). She also cooks green beans, carrots, peas, until soft, and mixes them with the chicken. This has worked well for her and the dog.
I think the very best food for dogs with allergies is California Natural…it has the most limited ingredient list of ANY dry food. Another option would be one of the allergy formulas put out by Natural Balance. Taste of the Wild makes some formulas with unique proteins (bison, duck), but California Natural has the least ingredients, meaning less likely to contain an allergen. All of the dogs can eat any of these foods.
