canned dog food question?
Okay so i have two dogs that are on Blue Buffalo and Alpo canned food. they are having digestive issues like diarrhea. and i know its the alpo cuz my chihuahua was fine before. so i want to know what kind of canned dog food from blue buffalo would be good to mix with his food. He is on the Small breed Chicken and Rice formula.
I was only feeding the alpo because the previous owner of my new dog gave it to us. And no my chihuahua WON’T eat without it. I’ve tried not giving him treats all day and his food being the only thing he gets and he still wont eat. I only mix a little wet food with the dry food so he’ll eat so its not a whole can and no dry dog food at all. ive tried soaking his food in water to soften it and still he’ll only eat a little them walk away from it. if you guys have any other ideas please give them because i dont know what else to do. its not an underlying health problem i know that.
honestly anything in blue buffalo is better than alpo and almost better than anything else sold. if your mixing the two together than for taste i would stay within the same flavor area. Also, if they havent been on the chicken and rice formula long, and they are having diarrhea i would suggest trying lamb or another protein. some dogs have chicken allergies, good luck!
Blue Buffalo makes a canned food formula for small breeds. It’s called Homestyle Recipe Small Breed Chicken, with garden vegetables and brown rice.
Is there a reason why you have to add any canned food?
You shouldn’t feed wet food it just causes problems with the dogs teeth. And don’t give that "my dog won’t eat without it" crap because once you stop and they know thats all they are getting they will eat. NO matter what brand of wet food, all wet food is bad to feed.
Blue Buffalo is an awesome food, but Alpo is AWFUL. That’s probably the reason for the diarrhea.
Take Them Off The Canned food, It Will Keep Their Stools Loose, The Dry Should Be Fine. Maybe Give Them A Soft Treat Every Now And Then. Good-Luck!!!
I would not give just a canned food diet this would be a bad thing. Tooth decay and gum disease is a big problem. I always mix my dogs food canned and dry to help keep the teeth clean. Alpo is a bad idea in general. If you love your dog feed it well. Do your research.
Alpo is not a good food. I feed my Miniature Pinscher Harvest Blend Growth-Maintenance. The first two ingredients are named meat products.
Alpo is very poor-quality dog food. Anything you can find at the supermarket, Walmart, or a big-box pet store (Petco, Petsmart, etc.) is not good food. (Good food can be found at local mom’n'pop pet stores and online.)

If you want recommendations, here are some I’ve had experience with (for my dog – have not eaten them myself!): Merrick, Before Grain [note the canned foods in this brand are NOT meant to be fed alone as they are not balanced!], Weruva, and TikiDog.
By the way, canned foods are not bad for dogs or their teeth; that is an old wives’ tale that has never been proven. And kibble does not clean teeth no matter what the shape or texture, either; that’s another wives’ tale.
