What can I do to get my Senior Dog to eat?

My Dog,Joy, has lost a lot of weight in the last month. Her teeth have become very sensitive so eating her meal everyday is getting very hard. Her meal consists of a cup of dry dog food and a half a can of Alpo Wet food twice a day. We have tried senior dog food but she does’nt like it and refuses to eat it! We have her teeth cleaned every year. I have grown up with Joy…and love her to death…She is twelve years old.
Try giving her really soft stuff like gravy covered/soaked food, or tuna. I wish you the best, good for you for giving your dog a great life.
You can try to make it more appetizing like putting peanut butter in the food. Since her teeth are sensitive, dry dog food may not be the right thing anymore. Try softening it with water or just start giving her only wet food.
reverse the measurements of her food.
try getting some taste of the wild dog food and adding water to it to make it softer, the taste of the wild is really appealing to almost all dogs i work at a boarding kennel and when a boarder isn’t eating we will mix a little bit of it in and that almost always gets them to start eating, i would ditch the can food if possible, there is a lot of sugar in it and it will make her teeth worse, especially alpo, if she has to have wet food check to make sure it doesn’t have added sugar in it, high quality foods won’t(such as taste of the wild and other high quality foods)
My Rattie is 18. I’ve also grown up with him. It is what it is. I started making my own dog food for him. I know this isn’t an option for all, but it’s not that hard. He can’t eat anything hard. What teeth he does have left are pretty much useless. He goes to the doggy dentist. But just like with us, the teeth go. What can you do? In most aspects he looks and acts like a pup. He just has bad teeth. And his eye sight is going too. That’s a different story. In about an hour of your time you can cook up a whole week’s worth of food for him. It’s soft, free of chemicals and empty calories. One of my recipes are boiling a whole chicken. taking it out of the water and then making rice with the chicken water. Then debone the chicken and add it to the rice. I reserve half the chicken for the oatmeal. He’s actually put on weight. Anyways, educate yourself on what dogs can not eat. What is toxic to them. Then google recipes for dog food. Your dog can have a lot of life left. If I managed to raise three kids and have a dog that is 18, I think I might know something. LOL
